The Hypertextual Lounge -- an intertextual space (videos, pics, articles, etc.) for the Cupeyville Community in San Juan, P.R.
I manage the content of the blog according to my circumstances as a Biology teacher. And, a very big circumstance, the pink elephant in the room: the Internet. Like a museum curator organizing an exhibit with a conceptual thread in mind, The Hypertextual Lounge will ‘curate’ the Internet; promoting responsible and significant media consumption.

The Science Club
Objective: To develop scientific literacy through hands on activities and socialized discussions regarding Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM).
Students participate in discussions--debates, in situ readings, documentaries, films, etc.--regarding topics that deal with contemporary issues in scientific and humanistic frameworks. These topics will include: pseudoscience, philosophy of science, bioengineering, economy, ethics, etc. Simple, low cost, hands on science activities (one for each mayor natural science) will be designed and carried out by students during club periods. These activities--all of which are aligned to STEAM--will be done with Elementary School students for the final presentation. A membership fee of 5 dollars per students, will be required during this semester to pay for the materials of the hands-on activities.
Samples of student's work--for both, The Hypertextual Lounge and The Science Club
The following images were taken by students, using their smartphones as microscopes (more info here: DIY Microscopy)
Arnaldo Franco, senior for the 2015-2016 school year, wrote an essay about the relationship between life and cosmology:
"This is one of the few posts–if not the first–that contains no writing at all, and yet with only a GIF we are able to find a relation between two scientific discoveries and their processes: the correction of the solar system model and the discovery of DNA as the genetic material. For starters, Ptolemy’s model stated that the center of the universe was the Earth itself; we now know that this was an erroneous thought, just like thinking that proteins were the most important molecules of genetic inheritance due to the uncertainty of DNA. Actually, both reasons for these thoughts are similar: there was not enough evidence and no way to think that the Earth was not the center of the universe and that proteins were not the genetic material. It made sense to many because the sun and planets seemed to revolve around the Earth while proteins were present in almost every biological aspect."

The students of The Science Club designed a questionnaire to assess the scientific literacy of the Cupeyville community:
The results of the research were displayed in the High School Information Center:
